- Easily double this recipe to serve as many people as needed.
- Serve this many different ways! It’s a versatile protein that can pair well with yummy sides.
How to Make Smothered Chicken
- Cut the chicken breasts and season with salt & pepper.
- Add the all-purpose flour, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika to a bowl and stir to combine. Take out ¼ cup of the flour mixture and reserve it for gravy.
- Add the oil to a skillet over medium-high heat. While the pan heats up, place the chicken in the larger bowl of the flour mixture and coat the chicken with the flour mixture. You will have some leftover flour to discard.
- Add the chicken pieces to the skillet and cook for 5 minutes per side until golden but not quite fully cooked through. Transfer chicken to a clean plate.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low and add the butter to the skillet. Once it’s melted, add in the diced onions and minced garlic and cook until softened and golden.
- Sprinkle the ¼ cup of reserved seasoned flour into the pan. Cook for about a minute, stirring constantly.
- Add in the salt, pepper, chicken broth and Worcestershire sauce and stir until the flour has dissolved while scraping the browned bits off the bottom of the pan, then stir in the cream.
- Increase the heat to medium and place the chicken back in the pan and cook for another 5-7 minutes or until the chicken is fully cooked through and the gravy has thickened a bit.
How to Store Leftover Smothered Chicken
Transfer leftover smothered chicken to an airtight container and allow to cool completely. Store in the fridge for 3-4 days. You can freeze this if you’d like, but with a cream-based gravy, it may not reheat well once thawed.
Southern smothered chicken is such a cozy classic! Make it for dinner this evening — the family will gobble it right up!
