Helpful Tools
How to Make Peeps Rice Krispies Treats
- Prepare a 9×13 baking dish by spraying it with non stick cooking spray and then set it to the side.
- To begin, place the mini marshmallows into a large bowl. Then put each of the different peeps in separate microwave safe bowls as well.
- Place butter into the bowl of purple peeps and heat in the microwave for a minute and 15 seconds. Stir until combined, then pour rice krispies cereal into the mixture.
- Press the mixture into the previously prepared pan.
- Repeat this process and melt each bowl of marshmallow peeps with butter, and then mix in cereal. Press each layer over the previous one in the baking dish.
- Cover the pan and allow to set at room temperature for about 3 hours, or until fully set.
- Use a sharp knife to slice into squares and serve!
How to Store Peeps Rice Krispies Treats
Transfer leftover treats to an airtight container with parchment paper in between layers if you have to stack them. They will stay fresh at room temperature for 1-2 weeks. You can store them in the fridge if you prefer, however you’ll need to take them out to come to room temperature before eating!
Can I melt the marshmallow mixture on the stove top?
Yes! Place marshmallow peeps and butter into a large saucepan and melt over medium-low heat. Make sure you stir continuously and immediately remove the mixture from heat once it has melted. Add the cereal into the pan once the marshmallows are melted and mix. Then wipe out the pan well before continuing with the next batch for the next layer.
Why aren’t my rice krispie treats staying together?
If you have peeps rice krispie treats that are not staying together, you likely didn’t let them set long enough. It typically takes about 3 hours, at room temperature, for the marshmallow and cereal mixture to set. I know it’s tempting to cut into them early, but waiting for them to fully set will ensure success!
What do I use if I can’t find peeps?
Sometimes peeps are so popular that they sell out quickly. If you can’t find the colors you want, then you can use regular mini marshmallows for every single layer! Once the marshmallows are melted, mix in a few drops of food coloring before adding the cereal. Then you can still have the colored layers that you want!
Pro Tips for the best Easter Rice Krispie Treats
- If you’re mixture is sticking to your hands or the silicone spatula that you are using to mix, spray them with cooking spray. This will help keep the marshmallow cereal mixture from sticking.
- Make sure to press the cereal down into an even layer in your baking dish. You won’t want to have some super thick treats and others that are thin.
- Once you have melted the peeps, work quickly to mix in the cereal and get it pressed down into the pan. This will help keep it malleable as you form the treats!
I hope you love this peeps rice krispie treats recipe as much as we do! They’re just so tasty and fun!

Nowhere does it state how much of anything to mix… how many cups of rice crispies per layer? How much butter?
