- Saltine Crackers – This is the savory base for our sweet and savory Christmas candy crack!
- Salted Butter – Another savory element, so I like make sure I’m using salted butter and not unsalted.
- Brown Sugar – This ingredient is key to getting that caramelized toffee goodness…oh so yummy!
- Chocolate Chips – You can use milk chocolate or dark chocolate, whichever you prefer.
- M & M’s – Personally, this is my favorite topping for this easy toffee recipe! Use the red and green M & M’s for an extra festive pop!
- Toasted Pecans – This topping will help cut a little bit of the sweetness of the toffee and chocolate.
- Flake Salt – The best sweet and savory duo, salt and chocolate.
- Sprinkles – This won’t necessarily add anything flavor wise, but it sure is festive!

How to Make Christmas Toffee
- Cover a sheet pan in aluminum. Use either heavy duty aluminum foil or spray with cooking spray after cover the sheet pan. This will help avoid sticking later.
- Layer saltine crackers on the sheet pan, be sure not to leave any open space.
- In a saucepan, combine butter and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil and continuously stir until it forms a syrup-like consistency.
- Pour the syrupy mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, then bake it for four minutes.
- Take the caramelized saltines out of the oven and evenly sprinkle the chocolate chips on top. Once the chocolate melts, spread it across the top of the saltines.
- Sprinkle with your toppings. We used four, but you can use as many as you would like and whatever your would like!
- Refrigerate the Christmas crack until the chocolate has set. Then, cut or break into pieces and enjoy!

I only have unsalted butter. Can I still use that?
Yes! Salted butter will give your Christmas Crack a more savory flavor, but unsalted butter will work just fine. Just add a little bit of salt!
Can I use any type of baking sheet?
Any sheet pan will do! And if they’re all taken up with the other Christmas goodies you’re baking, an 11×17 dish will work as well.
Can I freeze the chocolate to get it to set faster?
I recommend chilling the Christmas crack in the fridge after spreading the chocolate. Freezing it before it is set can result in the chocolate separating from the toffee and crackers.

Christmas Crack
Ingredients
- 1 sleeve saltine crackers aprox. 40 crackers
- 1 cup salted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 12 ounce bag semisweet chocolate chips
Toppings
- ¼ cup red and green M&Ms
- 1 Tablespoon toasted pecans
- 1 Tablespoon sprinkles
- 1 ½ teaspoon salt flakes
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Line a 15.5 inch x 10.5 inch jelly roll baking pan with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
- Arrange saltines in prepared pan in a single layer, breaking or cutting them, if necessary, to fill all spaces.
- Combine butter and brown sugar in small saucepan over medium heat, and bring to boil, stirring constantly. Cook until thick and syrupy, about 3 minutes.
- Pour toffee mixture over Saltines and spread it out evenly.
- Bake in preheated oven until bubbly, 4 minutes.
- Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips over toffee layer. Set pan aside until chocolate has melted, then spread evenly over the top. Sprinkle with desired toppings. We wrote the recipe for four different toppings, if you want one over the entire recipe you'll have to adjust the topping amount.
- Refrigerate until chocolate is firm. Cut or break into pieces. We got about 35 pieces.
- Store in airtight container in the fridge for one week or the freezer for 3 months. Refrigeration is not necessary, but helps to keep them fresh.
